Using the Novation Launchpad Pro With Logic Pro X

Most people who have ever heard of the Novation Launchpad Pro will have associated it with Ableton Live. However did you know that this fantastic device can also be used very successfully with Logic Pro X?  Well yes indeed it can. And in this video I will demonstrate to you exactly how you can go about setting it up and putting it to work.

The Novation Launchpad Pro is a beautiful MIDI controller unit. In fact, it’s one of the most eye-catching devices in my studio once it’s up and running. Plus, it most definitely looks great in a live performance. There is so much you can do with it as a producer and it will give you a whole lot of flexibility, both in your recording studio as well as in a live setting.

Build Quality of the Novation Launchpad Pro

Novation Launchpad ProThe design and build quality of the Novation Launchpad Pro is superb. It comprises 64 velocity sensitive touch pads which light up beautifully with different colours depending on the pressure applied during use. The unit is also very portable and despite it’s fairly rugged build it’s lightweight enough to slip into your rucksack for use on the go.

There are also an array of selector buttons which also light up and are dedicated to specific functions of the unit. A 5v DC port added for power, however I always run my unit straight off the USB port on my laptop. This supplies the device with sufficient power to operate. One might even call the design of this amazing unit sexy, as it really does stand out on stage as well as in the studio.

Ableton Live and the Launchpad Pro

It would be fair to say that the Novation Launchpad Pro was built specifically as a companion for the Ableton Live DAW. As a controller for Live the unit works like magic. Many of the functions of the device correspond perfectly with the loop based format and performance of Ableton.

It’s therefore no wonder that many users have ignored the fact that Logic also benefits from the great functionality of this controller. Admittedly there are a number of things which you can do on Ableton Live but not on Logic Pro X using the Launchpad Pro. But that doesn’t dismiss the fact that this is a very effective controller when used with Logic.

Ableton Push vs Launchpad Pro

Ableton PushIn a way the Novation Launchpad Pro might be considered the poor man’s Push. It is a far more affordable device to purchase compared to Ableton costly Push unit. The Push being specifically designed for their own DAW. Nevertheless, I’d say I have found the Launchpad Pro to be very useful to within my studio. I’ve had different drum machines and MIDI controllers over the years but the Launchpad Pro is quite honestly a joy to work with.

So if like me you are a Logic Pro X die-hard user then check out this unit as you might just find it to be a great partner in meeting your production and programming needs.
